Ribbons

Today my friend gave me

blue and yellow ribbons

to pin on my jacket.

Two to hand out.

The war grows desperate.

Compassion for the suffering Ukrainians

battles with my smoldering anger

for the attention and support

given to that country

of white-skinned Europeans.

*

Yes, says our president,

we will take in 100,000 refugees.

*

People fleeing El Salvador

are turned away–

South Sudan, Syria, Myanmar,

Congo, Nigeria, Yemen,

Afghanistan, Eritrea—

all in states of war,

10,000 or more

deaths this year

in each country.

Look in the mirror with wide eyes.

Who cries on the other side of the wall?

Angels make their hope here

on this struggling planet

of refugees and school shootings.

Why do they persist?

Because they’re angels.

How can they not weep for us?

*

Today the radio sent me

back to Sandy Hook.

Twenty children, six adults

Shot

And before Adam Lanza

entered that school,

he shot his mother.

*

What happened next?

*

Alex Jones of Infowars

told his listeners

that the shooting was staged

A government conspiracy

to take Americans’ guns away.

*

Grieving families were harassed.

Told that their children had been seen

Alive.

*

Will Mr. Jones have something to say

about the Russians bombing

a maternity hospital?

*

Oh, angels, do you have words

for this insanity?

I don’t.

Do you have hope?

Help for us.  Hope for us.

We are foundering.
